International Exchange

translated by Ichiro Oka & Craig Lawson

Kushimoto has seen a lot of historical events related to international exchange, such as the shipwreck of a Turkish battle ship, the Eltorulu, a visit by an American ship, the Lady Washington, and emigration to foreign countries.
We have exchanged high school students between Kushimoto High School and Hemet High School in California, USA, since 1995, under the educational homestay program. Students at each high school have experienced homestays in each other's country.

1. Exchange with the city of Mersin

In 1890, a Turkish battle ship named the Eltorulu came across a typhoon and sank near Cape Kashino on Oshima island. Oshima islanders managed to save 69 out of the 600 member crew in this tragic accident. It is this strenuous rescue work and the memorial services held to console the victims' souls by the islanders that underlie friendship between Japan and the Republic of Turkey.

2. Exchange with Hemet High School in the U.S.

HEMET1
Kushimoto and Hemet in California are sister cities. In November, 1995, the delegation of young people composed of Kushimoto Senior High School students was formed and visited Hemet High School to discuss a sister school plan. In August 1996, Kushimoto Senior High School sent to Hemet a delegation comprised of the principal, the president of the P.T.A. and five other members to establish a sister school relationship. They stayed there from August 21st to 28th. The signing ceremony of sister schools between Kushimoto High School and Hemet High School was held on August 23rd and the following things were decided:

1) to exchange letters (including e-mails) among students and teachers at both schools.
2) to exchange paintings, handicrafts and information about each city.
3) to conduct a short homestay program in Spring.

Hemet
Hemet is about two hours drive inland from Los Angeles and surrounded by low hills. The city has a peaceful atmosphere and good security. People there are nice and sincere. Hemet has a population of above 50,000 and it has been increasing year by year.
